TOILET
BOYS
Toilet
boys
By Arthur Karras
Glam rock is alive and well in the hands
of New York’s Toilet Boys. Their self titled debut album is a rollicking
riotous return to the glory days when pretty boys in pretty make-up ruled
the world.
This brash brand of rockers write songe about
sex, sleaze, money fame; they want it , they seek it and we want that rock
n roll dream too. The songs are short, anthemic and fun. Rock can be over
intellectualised, but The Toilet Boys are a back to basics band that demand
your attention
Lead singer Guy is the spunkiest bloke you’ll
ever see. He’s Bret Michael’s meets Heather Locklear. Sporting long blonde
locks, lipstick, black nail polish a Too Drunk To Fuck shirt and leopard
print pants, you quickly get their drift. He has buns so tight he could
easily slip into a pair of Warrick Capper’s footy shorts circa 1987. He
can sing pretty darn well too. ( Warrick Capper was a superstar Aussie
rules football player in the 80’s, also looking like a cross between
Bret and Heather and yes his pants were very tight. Yes they were indeed….Unfortunately
he tried to sing and it was all down hill from there.-Bek).
The album kicks off with the aptly titled
Party Starts Now and takes you on a roller-coaster ride fulled with tales
of love lost and found, fortunes won and lost and good times followed by
more good times. The formula is simple. Fun songs with infectious hooks.
Stories anyone with a bit of attitude and free-spirit can relate to. Toss
in the odd ‘Oh-Yeah’, ‘C’Mon’, ‘Bang-Bang’ and you have enough hip-shakin’,
body movin’, fist punchin’ action one could ask for.
While the band look very glam the music is
very cross-over. It could lure lost metal heads, yet is alternative and
poppy enough to grab anyone who likes the sound of punchy guitars, and
an anthemic chorus.
The whole album is a winner, but particular standouts are Cant Wit, Future is Now, Another Day In The Life which is featured on the American Pie 2 soundtrack and Kiss In The Wind, where the band sends kisses with a lot more lust and fervour than Nikki Webster’s Strawberry Kisses . (she’s the little chick on the Olympic’s opening ceremonie who is really beginning to get on our collective nerves).
If you’re looking for an album that puts the
fun back into rock n roll, look no further. One of the best albums I’ve
heard in years.
