TOUR MOM DIARY
On three separate occasions, I had the opportunity to go on the road with the
Toilet Boys. They allowed me to take a lot of photos, and even videotape
whatever I wanted to. What resulted are some very candid photos and video
shots of the band on the road, and on the stage, as well as some very amusing
stories. The reason I am putting my personal stories and photos up here is
to give other fans insight into what the band is like on and off stage and to
see what it like up close from a fan's perspective.
I first met Sean when I went to see the Donnas in Hoboken, NJ in November of
1998. We started talking, and the Toilet Boys were coming up to Buffalo,
where I am from, 2 weeks following that show. I offered to hook them up with
hotels and travel information because that's my thing. (I went to school for
Travel and I also work in the Hotel Industry.) I met them at their hotel and
that night they convinced me and my friend, Jeanine (who you will hear about
here and there in the following pages), to go with them to the rest of the
shows. We did. We both had jobs; Jeanine took care of merchandise, and I
did all the pyro during the shows. The Toilet Boys had their van, and Jeanine and I drove with Adam in her car. It was so comfortable. They treated us like they knew us forever, and we didn't stop being fans for one minute. We even listened to Living Like a Millionaire with Adam in the car. And yes, we also had to listen to a whole lot of Adam's King Diamond and Mercyful Fate collection. Our next encounter with the Toilet Boys was when we took the train down to NYC to see them play a big show at the Bowery Ballroom, opening for Degeneration. While not the best show they played (thanks to the management of the Bowery Ballroom who cut their set short and wouldn't let them do their pyro), it was definitely great to see them in their hometown. I was very happy to meet Adam's lovely wife, a photographer from Japan, and his mom, who now lives in Washington, DC. Jeanine and I stayed at Guy's house that night, and met his friend Lyle Derek, one of the most beautiful men I have ever seen. We also got invited as guests on Sean and Rocket's show on the Pseudo network called Hotbox. The network no longer exists, but Hotbox ran for about 2 years.
Shortly after that, word came that the Toilet Boys were going through Canada
yet again. This time with the Remainz, Marky and DeeDee Ramone's band. This
actually gave us time to plan and make sure everything went smoothly. This
time they had a pyro guy, and I just took on the duties of a full fleged Tour
Mom. Taking Care of Business for the most part. Everything went smoothly, and this time I had a video camera. I was able to shoot for the first two days until some stripper called Tammy from London dropped my camera and busted it. Regardless, I got nearly 4 hours of footage that is highly entertaining. I even got a classic shot of DeeDee with Adam and George Gorlick. The next time I saw them was in June of 1999 when they played Joey Ramone's birthday bash at Coney Island High, in NYC. This was one of the greatest times I have ever had, and I am sure they did as well. I stayed with Adam and his wife (and 2 adorable pugs) and got to watch the sound check and everything. I can say that they were so excited about playing on stage with Joey singing, and I have never seen anything like it before, and I probably never will again. In April of 2000 I got to see Sean and Rocket when I went to New York for my 23rd birthday. They had just gotten back from Los Angeles, and Guy and Eddie were still in California. I went to the Hotbox studio again and had a great nite hanging out with Rocket and then hittin’ the town with Sean. It was a really special birthday. I didn’t get to see them live, though, until August 18th and 19th of 2000 when they played two back to back nights at the Continental in New York City. It was the first time I got to see the band live in 14 months, and it was so exciting. In mid December of 2000 on a Sunday afternoon, I received a call from Adam asking me if I wanted to be their tour mom again, for the first time in a year and a half. Of course I said YES. In the following pages you can read day by day details of my time on the road with the Toilet Boys. You will find my takes on the shows, as well as very rare and personal photographs that I took of the band, their fans, and people we met along the way. I hope I can do the band justice and satisfy a lot of fans with this page. I have been working on it for a while and would love your feedback so feel free to email me here at Another Day in the Life.
